Josie’s on Chopped! Part 1
When Josie Gordon tells a story, you can’t help but listen, especially when she’s talking about something as exciting as competing on an episode of Food Network’s Chopped. I sat down with the chef, caterer, and cookbook author in the Lake Isle Press office last week to talk about the lead-up to the filming of the show, which airs at the end of the month, but what started as a one-on-one interview quickly included the whole office – Josie’s hilarious account of the experience drew everyone in.
Josie first came to be on Chopped through her co-author on Party Like a Culinista, Jill Donenfeld, who gave Josie’s name to the Food Network after being asked if she knew of anyone who might be a good fit for the show. Josie was initially chosen as a backup chef last year, but was asked back to be a full-fledged contestant this season.
On the day of filming, contestants were instructed to meet at 6:25 AM at a Starbucks across the street from the Food Network headquarters at Chelsea Market. At that point, Josie had no idea who the other contestants were, but she picked them out quickly. They were the ones “gazing into everyone else’s eyes, trying to see if you’re on the show, too.” That, and they were all carrying knife bags. Once the four contestants finally found each other, it became a mind game of sizing up the opponents – “trying to figure out who has the most confidence and who’s going in there looking like a scared kitty.”
After chatting for a bit, they were finally called into the studio, where they had to give up their phones and empty their pockets before actually starting to cook. They were also offered breakfast, but there weren't any takers - “Of course no one wanted to eat because we all felt like barfing. Why would you put eggs in front of us right now?!”
To see how Josie fared, tune in to Food Network on July 30th at 10PM, and join Josie’s viewing party on Facebook – you can chat with her during the show! Also look out for the second part of Josie’s interview, to be posted after the episode airs.
